AI Journal Suggester

Selecting an appropriate journal for research publication is an important step in the research process. A suitable journal should be of high quality, reputable, and reach the target audience, thereby increasing the chances of acceptance and effective publishing. Traditionally, researchers often choose journals based on recommendations from their advisors or by searching databases and considering various factors such as journal scope, indexing metrics like Impact Factor or Quartile (Q1–Q4), review timelines, and publication fees. However, this method can be time-consuming and may offer limited access to in-depth journal insights.

With the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), many leading publishers have developed tools called Journal Suggesters or Journal Finders. These tools assist researchers in quickly and accurately finding journals that match their manuscript’s content. Users only need to input basic information such as the title, keywords, or abstract, and the system will process and suggest relevant journals along with supporting information such as journal indices, publication scope, and access type (Open Access or Subscription).

In this article, the library introduces popular and reliable AI-powered journal selection tools from various publishers and platforms:

🔍 1. Manuscript Matcher (https://mjl.clarivate.com/home)

Manuscript Matcher is a tool for searching journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) (the same journal lists as Web of Science). It includes journals from various academic fields—science, humanities, social sciences, and others—worldwide. This AI tool enhances the chances of identifying the right journal for a manuscript and allows users to compare various journal attributes.

*** Pros: “Manuscript Matcher” searches across journals from multiple publishers listed in Web of Science, unlike other tools that only search within their own publishing.***

🔍 2. Elsevier Journal Finder (https://journalfinder.elsevier.com/)

Elsevier Journal Finder is a tool that helps users identify suitable journals from the Elsevier publishing group for article publication. Its highlight is the use of smart search technology and research-specific terminology to match a manuscript with the appropriate Elsevier journals. Users can enter the article title, abstract, and relevant keywords, as well as specify the subject area of their work. Additionally, Elsevier Journal Finder offers extra functions to refine the search results, including the ability to indicate a preference for subscription-based journals and/or open access journals, set desired Impact Factor and CiteScore levels, and specify the review and publication timelines they are looking for.

🔍 3. Springer Nature Link (https://link.springer.com/journals)

Springer’s Journal Finder provides access to over 3,000 journals for publishing articles. Similar to Elsevier Journal Finder, users can enter their abstract and receive journal suggestions along with key details like Impact Factor, 5-year Impact Factor, time to first decision, and journal relevance to the manuscript.

🔍 4. JANE (Journal/Author Name Estimator) (https://jane.biosemantics.org/)

Journal / Author Name Estimator (JANE) is a tool designed to assist users in finding suitable journals for publishing their articles. It connects directly to the PubMed/MEDLINE database and features a user-friendly interface. Users can input keywords, an abstract, or the article title to search for relevant journals. However, JANE lacks advanced functions found in tools like Springer Journal Selector or Elsevier Journal Finder, such as setting a minimum Impact Factor or specifying the decision time for manuscript acceptance. Nevertheless, JANE provides the Article Influence metric, which reflects how frequently articles from a given journal are cited during the first five years after publication. This information serves as a helpful reference for users when deciding which journal to submit their work to.

🔍 5. Taylor & Francis Journal Suggester (https://authorservices.taylorandfrancis.com/journal-suggester/)

Taylor & Francis Journal Suggester is an AI-powered online tool that helps authors find suitable journals from the Taylor & Francis database—one of the world’s leading academic publishers, well-known for disseminating research across various disciplines including science, social sciences, and the humanities. This tool is free to use; users simply enter the abstract or keywords of their article, and the system will process the input to recommend relevant journals. It also provides key information such as the journal name, cover image, scope, Impact Factor, CiteScore, SNIP, acceptance rate, and time to first decision. Additionally, users can click to view more details about the suggested journals, including author guidelines, editorial board, and previously published articles.

🔍 6. Wiley Journal Finder (https://journalfinder.wiley.com/)

Wiley Journal Suggester is an online tool that recommends academic journals published by Wiley (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.), a globally renowned publishing company established in 1807. Wiley is known for its high-quality journals across various disciplines, including science, engineering, medicine, social sciences, and business. The tool is free to use. Users can enter the article title and abstract (up to 300 characters) on the Wiley Journal Suggester website, and the system will analyze the input and suggest journals that match the content. It also provides supporting information such as the journal name, cover image, editor’s name, Impact Factor, publication model (e.g., Open Access), and the relevance score of the match. Also, users can click to view more details about each suggested journal, including journal scope, editorial board, author guidelines, and previously published articles. While Wiley Journal Suggester significantly simplifies the journal selection process, users are still advised to have their own judgment and carefully consider all relevant factors before submitting their manuscripts.

✔️ 7. Think. Check. Submit. (https://thinkchecksubmit.org/)

Think. Check. Submit. is a global campaign that helps academics and researchers identify trustworthy journals. It provides a simple checklist organized into three sections: Think, Check, and Submit, which users can follow to evaluate journals or publishers. What makes Think. Check. Submit. especially valuable is its focus on educating researchers, promoting integrity in scholarly publishing, and building trust in the research and publication process.
